Description

By end of the course candidates will be able to manage life threatening emergencies and minor injuries in the workplace whilst waiting for help. The content of the qualification meets the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements for training emergency first aiders.

Topics covered:

  • The Role and Responsibility of an Emergency First Aider
  • Assessing an Incident
  • Managing an Unresponsive Casualty who is Breathing Normally
  • Managing an Unresponsive Casualty who is not Breathing Normally
  • Recognition and Assistance of Casualty who is Choking
  • Managing a Casualty who is Wounded and Bleeding
  • Managing a Casualty who is in Hypovolaemic Shock
  • Managing a Casualty with a Minor Injury
  • Automated External Defibrillation

In line with guidance provided by the HSE, the qualification supports/approves workplace emergency first aiders for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course. Therefore, this qualification is valid for three years from the date of award. In addition to this, it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

This course is accredited by the Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance.

Intended audience

This qualification is aimed at learners who wish to become emergency first-aiders in the workplace.  No prior knowledge of First Aid is required and there are no pre-course study requirements.

It is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in English to enable them to complete the assessment.

Assessment

Practical demonstration and multiple-choice exam (learners must achieve a score of at least 11 out of 15 to pass).

Dress code

This course involves practical elements for CPR and to maintain comfort and dignity, it is recommended that delegates wear trousers or appropriate clothing.

Course overview

Health and safety in the workplace is important to every businesses, both in terms of protecting staff and the public, and ensuring that costly legal action and damage to reputation is avoided should the worst ever happen.

Intended audience

This course is suitable for all current or future supervisors, managers, and team leaders. As well as individuals wishing to advance their health and safety knowledge.

Assessment 

This qualification is assessed through a 60-question multiple-choice question examination. The duration of the examination is 2 hours.

Successful learners must achieve a score of at least 40 out of 60. Learners will achieve a Merit at 50/60

There are no prerequisites for this qualification, however knowledge of the basic principles of Health and Safety is assumed. It is recommended learners have Level 2 literacy or numeracy or equivalent.

Course overview

The Highfield Level 2 Award in Conflict Management (RQF) has been designed to provide conflict management skills to anyone working in a customer facing role, dealing with service users or the public in general.

Topics covered:

  • how communication can be used to solve problems and reduce the likelihood of conflict
  • the factors that influence human responses in conflict situations
  • how to assess and reduce risks in conflict situations
  • how to communicate effectively and de-escalate conflict in emotive situations
  • good practice to follow after conflict situations

This course is accredited by the Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance.

1-day programme

Intended audience

This course is suitable for individuals in customer/patient facing roles who would like a better understanding of how to prevent conflict situations, and who would like to gain more confidence in being able to deal with conflict situations should they arise. It is recommended learners have a minimum of level 2 in literacy.

Assessment 

This qualification is assessed through a multiple-choice question examination. The duration of the examination is 1 hours.

Learners must achieve a score of at least 20 out of 30 to pass.

There are no prerequisites for this qualification, although it is advised that learners have a minimum of level 2 in literacy.

Intended audience

This course is suitable for health and care staff working (or preparing to work) in customer/patient facing roles or where using a telephone is part of their role.

Assessment 

This qualification is assessed through a multiple-choice question examination. The duration of the examination is 1 hours.

Learners must achieve a score of at least 66% to pass.

There are no prerequisites for this qualification, although it is advised that learners have a minimum of level 2 in literacy.

Description

Attendees complete a theoretical study day with opportunities during the day for simulated practice using phlebotomy manikins.

Outcomes will enable attendees to understand:

  • The legal and professional implications of carrying out this expanded practice skill
  • Anatomy and physiology in relation to this skill
  • The importance of the tests being requested and the avoidance of pre-analytical errors
  • The equipment required and safe usage, risk management and clinical waste disposal requirements
  • Infection and prevention control precautions relevant to the skill of venepuncture.

To practice this skill with the manikins complete a skills assessment before commencing a competency based assessment package.

The course objectives are akin to National Organisational/Skills for Health competencies.

Intended audience

This course is suitable for all those who may be asked to undertake the procedure of venepuncture whether they hold a professional registration or a part of the wider workforce.

You must identify a work based Mentor who is competent in venepuncture in order to successfully complete this course. Your Mentor will be responsible for assessing your practical venepuncture skills following completion of this theoretical session.

Description

Assessment is concluded a series of questions, answers and scenarios throughout the course. For BLS, delegates will have the opportunity to practice chest compressions and rescue breaths on simulation manikins.

Course overview

This is an annual diabetes update course for those supporting patients with diabetes, including those who are currently administering insulin and/or injectable therapies. This course will not enable SHCSWs to be trained on how to administer insulin. By the end of the class delegates will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and their management
  • Explain the importance of supporting healthy lifestyles
  • Identify long term complications associated with diabetes
  • Understand and identify symptoms that are outside of normal parameters and appropriate action to take
  • Understand legal implications and accountability of record keeping
  • Identify different insulin injectable therapies
  • Identify appropriate support channels for end of life care in diabetes management

Healthcare assistants are welcome to attend this course on the assurance that there has been a trained Nurse who has attended the same or similar training within the last five years. This will support due diligence and ensure that all the litigation is assured.

Description

Protect people from fire by developing fire awareness and the role of the Fire Marshall.

 

Current legislation requires a managed risk approach to fire safety. Fundamental to a managed risk approach are robust and verifiable processes.

Description

Induction and Promotion of Continence

Description

A one day course to include;

  • Types of incontinence
  • Exploration of the principles of the maintenance of continence
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Reasons for bladder and bowel dysfunctions
  • Information gathering, documentation, urinalysis and bladder scanning
  • Treatments including toileting, bladder retraining, prevention of constipation and fluid modification
  • Management of incontinence to include pads, sheaths and catheters
